A night at Tulsi Indian Resturant and Fat Eddies Bar in Sol Square

A night at Tulsi and Fat Eddies

On the weekend it was cause for a small celebration so a good friend of mine booked our group in at Tulsi Indian restaurant on the corner of Gloucester St and Manchester St in Christchurch. I had been here before so was expecting a good time although unfortunately I came away rather dissatisfied.

We arrived and got shown to our table and ordered drinks, I asked for a vodka and orange but when the waiter came with the drinks, I was given just a large orange juice, so that was sent back and he returned with the correct drink. We then ordered our meals and I decided to try a new chef’s special dish which I asked for it to be mild, I also asked for a particular kind of naan bread.

Although when my meal arrived, it was rather more spicy than I really liked and my bread didn’t look like the type I had ordered either. A couple of my friends had ordered a medium spicy meal and found that their meals were more of a mild type. So for $26.50 including one vodka and orange, I wasn’t that impressed and combined with that fact that we were originally charged for the returned orange juice (although this mistake was finally corrected) and what I felt was an indifferent attitude from staff left me with the feeling of disappointment.

I must add that it was a Friday night and the restaurant wasn’t that busy so I would have to give a 4/10 rating for the service and food.

After leaving, we then headed to Sol Square and Fat Eddies bar. For those of you who don’t know? Sol Square is just off Manchester and Litchfield Streets and its an up and coming area, which has been modernized with cool funky shops and bars. This is exactly the sort of thing that Christchurch needs to re-energize the city centre.

Now I hadn’t been inside before but I liked what I saw, from the first moment you walk up the stairs, to entering the main area, you could be mistaken for being in New York or Paris. Really interesting décor which was rustic in a very cool way combined with a mixture of comfy couches and chairs and a great fire place. Seating was on different levels with a balcony outside which over looked the main square and the huge tv screen, there was also stage area in which an old guy was playing easy listening music. This was quite good and relaxing to listen too, later on another band played which rasied the tempo somewhat.

The crowd was a mixed age group with none of the young bogans you tend to see in some of the other bars. Had a great night there and it’s a place I intend to visit more often, very cool and hip, so well worth a visit if you haven’t been there.
Rating 8/10
