Toyota Opa –First impressions
You know what it is like, you decide to change your car but to what? That is always the big question to solve. My previous car was a 98 Toyota Camry 2.2, station wagon as when I bought it, I wanted car that could seat 5 adults in comfort over a long journey and petrol was only $1.27 a litre too. Well a little secret, I never actually took 5 adults on a long road trip and most of my trips tend to be around the city with my photography.
So with ever increasing prices at the pumps and also the direction I want to take my photography business, I decided to have a change. But I had no idea what to though, as I still wanted the versatility of a wagon but more fuel efficient and also just a little bit different in looks to reflect my creative outlook.
I looked at some European cars, but they tended to be your standard models like Golfs, Polos or some quirky Renault’s. I did look at a Renault Scenic suv and it was a very good price and condition but was an auto box and what I read online about Gallic auto boxes scared me off just a little.
So I started to do the rounds along Moorhouse Ave and saw this little number.
This is a 2000 model Toyota Opa and until now, I can't say that I have seen one before, but i liked the modern styling and the nice clean lines, very uncluttered and just different enough to stand out from the crowd which was just the thing I was looking for.
So cash changed hands and I am now the proud owner of an Opa.
After the Camry, this is just a bit different with the column auto gearshift and the speedo, rev counter and warning symbols all being digital and set in the middle of the dash to the drivers left. At first this took some getting used to although I find it okay now.
As with all Toyota’s, the controls are easy to use and well positioned and even though I am over 6ft, there is still plenty of head room. This is a different driving style to my Camry but as this is smaller car and weighs less, I expect to get better fuel economy and at present it roughly does about 12.5 km/ltr around town whereas the Camry was giving me about 8.5km/l, so a good result there.
Even though the Opa is just a 2.0 engine, its pretty peppy on the open road although sluggish until it has warmed up.
Nice clean lines inside and out
For all you engine buffs out there
So overall this is a great little car and I've had a few comments from people who thought that it was a lot newer than a 2000 model. Its almost a mix of 5 door hatch, station wagon and mini suv but for around city use, its great and it has enough get up and go for longer a journey, with the added bonus is that I haven't seen another around yet.
Bit of an arty shot and self portrait
