Book Review The Good German by Joseph Kanon
November 2nd 2007 07:34
Now a major motion picture from Warner Brothers, starring George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, and Tobey Maguire.
The bestselling author of Los Alamos and Alibi returns to 1945. Hitler has been defeated, and Berlin is divided into zones of occupation. Jake Geismar, an American correspondent who spent time in the city before the war, has returned to write about the Allied triumph while pursuing a more personal quest: his search for Lena, the married woman he left behind.
When an American soldier's body is found in the Russian zone during the Potsdam Conference, Jake stumbles on the lead to a murder mystery. The Good German is a story of espionage and love, an extraordinary re-creation of a city devastated by war, and a thriller that asks the most profound ethical questions in its exploration of the nature of justice, and what we mean by good and evil in times of peace and of war (net sourced)
I haven't seen the film yet but after reading this book, its one I will make a point of seeing though at the first opportunity.
This is a good book, I found the characters were well written and developed, the physical descriptions of Berlin in 1945, draw you further into the story and the chaos that was norm then. The plot twisted and turned and left you never quite knowing who was behind all the intrigue and deception. Also the lines between good and evil become blurred and you wonder who is the Good German ?
Overall a really good read, cracks along at a steady pace, with characters slipping in and out of the picture whilst all the time building up the suspense and tension.
