Shropshire Memories

March 22nd 2007 07:40
Hi everyone

I was going to do a post about why cats attack their owners but then out of the blue, this post started to take shape so thought I would go with the flow. It's strange how sights, sounds, scents will trigger distant memories but thats what happened tonight as I went into a local supermarket to get milk and for some reason looked at the beer section, only to see some Stowford Press cider in bottles for sale. Now the last time I had this was when I was in Shropshire when I did my geology field trip.

Shropshire (alternatively Salop or abbreviated Shrops) is a county in the West Midlands of England. It borders Wales to the west.

Shropshire is one of England's most rural and sparsely populated counties. The population of the non-metropolitan/shire county of Shropshire is 289,100 - making it the least populated two-tier governed area in the United Kingdom. With the recent Local Government White Paper's support for new unitary authorities, Shropshire County Council is proposing the abolition of Shropshire's district councils, becoming a unitary authority. [1] The borough of Telford and Wrekin, included in Shropshire for ceremonial and geographical purposes, has been a unitary authority since 1998.

The county town is Shrewsbury, although the new town of Telford is the largest town. The Ironbridge Gorge area of Shropshire is known as the birthplace of industry and there are other notable industrial sites located around the county. Ironbridge Gorge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which includes Ironbridge, Coalbrookdale and a part of Madeley.

I can't recall the date but I spent a week in February which is pretty cold and we stayed in a rambling old victorian country house where they still cooked with an Aga stove. It was a great week and I have loved that part of the country ever since.

Getting back to my cider, we stayed at a place called Craven Arms and then had meals at a local pub in Aston upon Clun called the Kangeroo Inn, owned by an Aussie would you know? Anyway they served the best pub meals I have ever tasted and also pints of Stowy Press hmmmmmmm.

There is an awful lot to see in Shropshire from landscapes of the Wrekin, StiperStones, Wenlock Edge, River Severn, to the historic towns of Ludlow, Bridgenorth, Ironbridge, Shrewsbury etc, there are castles, country houses, museums, old earth works, something for everyone.

Now all these photos are from freephoto. com and if you do a search on the net a wealth of info regarding Shropshire comes up and if you are visiting the UK, it's well worth a visit.
So tonights blog comes courtesy of a bottle of Stowford Press as I wouldn't had the idea otherwise.
Shall leave you with thought for the day 'Have impeccable manners'
(Lifes little instruction book)

It is well worth a visit, in Ironbridge, pretty sure thats where the tar tunnel is, this is a man made brick tunnel in the side of the hill, where naturally occuring tar appears, pretty cool, although it might have been in Bridgenorth?? But sure it is in Ironbridge.
Also there is a hill somewhere close to the Welsh Borders where a gypsy king is meant to have been buried on, but I will have to check my geology field books for the name.
Much Wenlock is a delightful little village and Wenlock Edge is full of fossils as lots of years ago, all that area was covered in warm seas. Think the TimeTeam did a tv episode in the village also.
Have fun exploring.
