Politics, news ,views & the Investment Adventurer

May 3rd 2007 07:37
Hi everyone

I was planning on doing a post about a seminar by Dr Gareth Morgan, The Investment Adventurer but when I went to register, all the seats were gone, so a big disappointment
Anyway I had only heard of Dr Morgan from seeing his books in local bookshops, making a mental note to put them on my to read list not realising that he was quite well known in NZ until I had a look on his website www.garethmorgan.com

If you are like me then these two books will appeal to any would be adventurers.

What else caught my eye today?
It seems that at last the leaders of the National party and the Labour party can actually work together to achieve something eg an ammendment to the anti smacking bill. This makes a big change as normally all we see is our elected MPs , acting like kids in the school ground, point scoring off each other, being disruptive and basically not giving a good impression to the people who elected them.

Is it small wonder that when our children see them acting like this, they then get confused when told off for displaying the same behaviour?

Sometimes I think they forget what they have been elected to do, which is to improve NZ and it's citizens not squabble between each other.

What else?
Oh yes, big thing on the news tonight about how the govt would like to give NZ less of a carbon foot print, so improving the building standards for new houses, cutting red tape for fitting solar systems etc. Now the question I have is , Why has this taken so long to come up with this?
As every winter, we are told there isn't enough water in the hyrdo lakes, so there might be brown outs and prices will have to go up etc. But has anyone thought just how many new houses are being built, each with all the mod cons, like diswashers, en suites etc. This all increases the electrical usage and to be honest what the govt is proposing is very little really.
If you are buying or building a new house, then it should be law that a solar water heating system should be fitted, as that is about 40% of heating costs. NZ calls itself clean and green but that is purely due to the fact that we only have 4 million people. On the news they were talking about double glazing etc, it's strange the kiwi attitude to having a warm house as in the UK , there is triple glazing etc.

What else?
Oh yes, annoying ads and the top ones this month would have to be any by Telecom.
How many times every night do we have to see the Telecom mobile one and that other one about the family who is addicted to online shopping and auctions, arrgghhh .

Thats enough tonight as sometimes you just have to stand up and express yourself.

Cheers

Hal
