Pirates - Live the Life

March 11th 2007 07:53
Hi Everyone

Had a night off last night from the computer although spent it on another kind of computer, an X Box games console. Now I have one on long term loan from a friend and every so often we have a games night. Yesterday afternoon I hired some games and this was one of them.
So about 4pm I thought after spending all day doing chores I would relax playing Sid Meier's
Pirates. This is the blurb from the back cover:

In Sid Meier's Pirates! players take the leading role of a Pirate Captain in the 17th century Caribbean - amassing fortune and fame in an attempt to seize a rightful place as one of the most revered and feared pirates in history. Players test their skills as a sea captain exploring the high seas and exotic ports in a richly detailed 3-D world. As your reputation and skills grow, so will the size and quality of your crew, your ability to take on larger enemy ships, raid and plunder heavily fortified ports, and locate ancient treasure

Now I really got into this game, in fact found it hard to turn it off and write this but work must come before pleasure at times. Anyway X Box is getting to be a old format, what with all the new consoles and games that are on the market and I doubt this would appeal to alot of gamers and I'll explain why .

This is a great game and I mean in a way that there isn't no blood and guts, there isn't no flesh eating zombies or ultra violence, this game is just good old fashioned fun, I mean who hasn't played pretend pirates when they were kids? And sometimes its great to be a kid again as I now have a 32 cannon sailing ship and depending on which port I am in, could be a Baron or Admiral. 'Wehaha land lubber'

The maps are pretty big and you sail from Florida right down through the Caribbean to South America. I have been playing on easy level but there are I think 5 different levels and you start out with a small ship and buy capturing plunder and ships you sell this on or keep the bigger ship. 'Shiver me timbers'

You do need to think about tactics, keeping your crew happy, keeping your ship in good repair and general wheeling and dealing etc, but on a wet winters day when you want to relax, then you could do worse then play a couple of hours on this. Well worth a look and the sort of game that if I had kids, I would be happy to let them play as at least they would be learning about a bit of history and geography.

Played a round of golf on Ascot over the weekend, so will post something about that tomorrow night.

thought for the day 'Keep your promises'

Hal
