Overnight stay on Avalanche Peak, Southern Alps, NZ
May 29th 2007 08:29
Hi everyone
Well the trans alpine cycle tour is almost here and as I was thinking about the weather and terrain, I thought I would share a trip we did last year.
We came up with the idea of of climbing Avalanche Peak and camping out over night as it wasn't that high (approx 1600-1700mtrs) so would be easy enough to carry the gear up.
Arthur's Pass village
Hmm iffy looking clouds rolling in
The trek through the bush is steep but well marked with little orange triangles and this track does get quite a lot of use from locals and tourists alike.
Take a note of this ridge pic.
Now the weather wasn't too bad but dark clouds were starting to gather, so speed was of the essence to reach that flat parts of the ridge line and find somewhere to pitch the tent?
Best spot we could find, so now having to build snow walls to shelter the tent.
Steveo with the tent up and now trying to cook dinner, time approx 5pm and starting to get pretty cool. Tent was quite small so we had to leave everything outside and it was pretty cold, as even in 3-4 season bags and sleeping in clothes, beanies etc, it was cold!

How are things going? And thanks for those comments, as its always nice to know that the effort is appriciated. Back all safe and sound, so need to start the process of sorting out the 200 photos and writing up the posts. Got some awesome photos for my fine art photography portfolio but can't put them on here until I work out how to use my watermarking program.
Catch you later
