Movie Rewind - Pirates of the Caribbean, At Worlds End
June 19th 2007 09:28
Now I had heard various comments regarding this movie and most of them weren't very good, so as I paid for my ticket, I hoped that it was going to be better than the second movie?
Well, where to start?? Apart from saying what a god awful mess! And a waste of good acting talent.
What was actually going on in the writers and directors minds, one can only ask? As I have just checked on the previous two films and they were directed and written by the same people, so how on earth could they get it so right for the first movie but go rapidly downhill with the next two? Ah unless its because the first one wasn't expected to be a hit, whereas the next two was purely in it for the money?
Anyway back to the film, this is a Disney movie but what is the first scene? Lots of people being hung, with their clothes being sorted into piles by a wagon. Now I sort of worked out why this scene might have been filmed, but when I first saw it, this reminded of the news reel footage from WW2, so not what I would really want any young kids to see. Then the movie jumped about somewhat as one moment they were just leaving Singapore, I blinked and they were then sailing around ice bergs??? I was like 'what the?' 'C'mon Gore, sort it out' Then with Elizabeth Swann's father, one minute he is on a boat, then the next time we see hime he is in Davy Jones locker, what, how, when? Sprung to mind.
There is a scene when we see where Jack is in Davy Jones locker, but all it reminded me of, was when Neo was trapped at the train station from one of the Matrix movies, same sort of thing really. Talking of Jack, now I like Johnny Depp for the strange and non mainstream roles that he plays, but his acting was almost on par with Keanu Reeves, eg he seemed to be sleep walking through it.
Too much visual eye candy/effects with the job of trying to distract you from the poor disjointed plot line and I wonder if after the last scene was edited, the director thought 'Yup this is the best one yet?' As I would be embarassed to have made a film like this.
This the problem with sequels is that just because we liked the first movie, it doesn't mean we will put up with the same of stuff over and over again. I read the movie review recently in Time magazine and the reviewer Richard Schickel feels it should have been called At Wits End and I have to agree with him on that one.
So wait until it comes out on dvd or hire Master and Commander for a good action movie (reviewed previously)

I choose to disagree with your alot of of you review for the third Pirates of the Carribian Movie. I read your review prior to seeing the movie and felt that parts of your review were poorly describing the movie. I was able to follow the story, and although it wasn't as good as the first or second movies, it wasn't as bad as you make it out to be.
Perhaps you haven't had a refresher in the first two movies recently and weren't able to follow the complete story from start to finish. I have had the luxury of veiwing the first two movies recently, and was able to see the connection of the stories. Maybe this would help you and your readers understand the third movies better.
I also disagree with this movie being based around Elizabeth Swan. I found she was part of the story, but not to the extent which you describe.
Perhaps you were influenced by the Time Magazine article you read - if you read this prior to seeing the film...
Thanks for you time,
Concerned reader...

I agree that there is a connection in the stories and haven't really disputed that either in my review, although as the three movies had a plot line that runs through them, if you look at Lord of the Rings, each movie and plot pretty much runs seamless from one to another and although I acknowledge it is a trilogy filmed back to back, Pirates is a trilogy of sorts and could have been done the same.
My main point of the review would be that all three movies are by the same director and writers, but only the first one seemed to the best in the way of plotting, pacing and continuity of the story line. And I wouldn't have thought it was too much to ask of the film makers to improve something overtime as if a new model of car is brought out and its worse than the previous models, its not going to sell, whereas I feel that the studio and director may have taken things for granted maybe, because the name Jack Sparrow and pirates sells?
Anyway thanks again for taking the time to read my review and if everyone agreed with everyone else, it would be a boring world, wouldn't it.
