Movie Rewind Night Watch
April 6th 2007 10:22
When I first saw this movie about 6 months ago, I found it a bit hard to follow and work out what was going on but after reading the book recently and watching it a second time around, I enjoyed it alot more.
Plot synopsis:
Living among normal humans are the "Others", humans who possess various supernatural powers. They are divided up into the forces of light and the forces of dark, who signed a truce several centuries ago to end a devastating battle. Ever since, the forces of light govern the night while the day belongs to their dark opponents. In modern day Moscow, the dark Others roam the night as vampires and other evil nightmares, while a "Night Watch" of light forces (among them Anton, a kind of seer and the movie's main character) try to control them and limit their outrages. Konstantin Khabensky plays Anton in The Night Watch
After a diet of Hollywood movies, its actually quite refreshing to watch a movie with a raw, fresh edge to it, the film seems to be entirely shot on location in Moscow, with crumbling, decaying apartment blocks, streets and deserted buildings, none of the Hollywood gloss here and the movie is all the better for it. Anton is played by the popular Russian actor Konstantin Khabebnsky and portrays his character with a weary, jaded perspective and if you are expecting something similar to Underworld where vampires have super powers and high tech gadgets, then this isn't the film for you. Although various characters do have different powers, they aren't shown as much as in the book. The main bad guy is Zavulon played by Victor Verzhbitsky (although the spelling seems to change depending on if you read the book etc) In certain moments of the film, his portrayal of the character reminded me of another actor called Rutger Hauer and there are moments in the film when they look very similar.
Overall, I would recommend watching this movie, its a bit strange at first, but is interesting to watch and some good Russian twists. Although if you can, read the book first as it will explain alot more things for you.
