Memories of Hurricane Katrina

October 4th 2007 08:08

Some of you might have seen these pics but they are just stunning and well worth another look although sad to say that they are not my work but would love an opportunity to capture such amazing images.

These pictures were taken by a photographer in
Magee, MS where the eye of the storm passed thru
- what an experience! Magee is 150 miles North of
Waveland, where the Hurricane made landfall in
Mississippi.

The dance of Katrina, part of her beauty as she left
destruction on her exit, is remarkably dramatic.

The next picture was taken from the third story

balcony of Saint Stanislaus College located next door
to Our Lady of the Gulf church in Bay Saint Louis,
Mississippi on the morning of August 29th, 2005.
This is believed to be the initial wave (tidal?) of
Hurricane Katrina. The wave was approximately 35
to 40 feet high. When it slammed into the beachfront
communities of Bay Saint Louis and Waveland, it
almost looks like a mountain. The force behind it would
have the same impact of one.It completely destroyed
99% of every structure along the beach for 9 miles and
more than a mile inland. But the destruction only started
there. The flooding which continued inland, destroyed
all but 35 homes in these two communities of
approximately 14,000 people.

As you can see pretty impressive pics and here are a couple in black and white

Hiya Heath

My word those are stunning photos! Unfortunate that something as beautiful as that could be so destructive.

The black and white just accentuates that beauty.

Thanks for sharing

Amazing photos!
Yes I saw lots of them, but great to see some again. Nature is truly in command, not us! The Earth and her weather systems have cleansed the world before, and will again, we are only a temporary malady for her.

I remember seeing the build up in Darwin, and the sky going a metal green, which I was told is the warning sign before a cyclone hits...that didn't sit well with me at the time, as Darwin City was wiped out on Christmas Day 1974 by such a cyclone, it started at midnight, and by the afternoon, Christmas Day, people crawled out of the rubble to see the entire city had almost been cleaned off the map, it looked just like those photos of Hiroshima.

cheers
