November 9th 2008 08:54

Last Night of the Proms, Town Hall, Christchurch 8th Nov 2008

Presented in association with Christchurch City Choir. We will bring you the best choral and orchestral music of English composers: Handel, Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Walton, Lennon and McCartney, to name just a few.

Join us for an exuberant night out with bells and whistles, and sing-alongs to all the traditional favourites of the famous Last Night of the Proms Land of Hope and Glory, Jerusalem, Rule Britannia, and many more. Dress up, bring your hats, streamers and flags, and we'll provide the music (net sourced)

Since moving to NZ ten years ago, this will have been the fourth time I have been to a Last Night of the Proms and each show is always a sell out. With conductor Brian Law, the Christchurch City Choir and guest soloist Yvonne Martin, it was always looking to be a good night out.

First piece was the rousing Crown Imperial (Coronation March) by Walton, which got everyone into the mood.

This was followed by pieces such as Zadok the Priest (Coronation Anthem no 1), Enigma Variations, Op36- Nimrod by Elgar, Excerpts from Facade by Walton with Yvonne Martin as the narrator. Next was London Suite by Coates with the final piece for the first half being Hodie (This Day) Epilogue) In the begining was the word byVaughan Williams.

After the interval, everyone took on more of a party theme.

Next was a selection of James Bond themes from classics such as For your eyes only, Live and let die and Goldfinger. Then Yvonne sung the lyrics to Diamonds Are Forever and Nobody Does it Better.

After a selection of songs from the musical Oliver, it was now time for the audience to join in with such classics as Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and Pomp and Circumstance March and Brian had the whole hall standing up singing along.

Overall not a bad night, although i have to be honest and say that I didn't think this time had the spark about it that I remember previously. Somehow it felt shorter in time and also even though everyone was excellent, it just felt something was missing.

Still enjoyed it though and does make you proud to be British. I did take some vid footage so currently unable to download it yet.
