HMNZS Canterbury visits Lyttelton, New Zealand
July 1st 2007 05:51
Today the people of Christchurch and Canterbury, came to Lyttelton to welcome the navy's newest multi role vessel (MRV) HMNZS Canterbury. This vessel will provide logistics support for deployment of light armoured vehicles, equipment and personnel..
Spec (net sourced)
Standard displacement 8000 tonnes, length 131 mtrs, beam 23.4mtrs, speed 19 knots, complement 53 core ship, 10 flight, 4 gov,7 army ships staff, 35 trainees, 250 troops, propulsion diesel engines, aircraft, two landing spots for helicopters.
The vessel arrived on Thursday but was open to the public today from 13.00 to 16.30, so I thought I would take a look around. Well as soon as I hit the traffic hold up on the approach to the Lyttelton tunnel, I knew something was up and it seems every man and his dog had driven to Lyttelton. Took me about 10 mins of driving around to find a park and there were people everywhere.
