Big Snow at Arthur's Pass, Southern Alps, New Zealand
August 17th 2008 08:59
In line with the winter weather we have been having here in NZ over the last week of so, the alpine village of Arthur's Pass, nestled in the Southern Alps along state highway 73, suffered a major dumping of snow over the last couple of days, resulting in the village being cut off and the highway closed for a short time.
So on that note, I decided to take a drive and see how far I could get? Snow chains are an essential item to have in the car and its handy to have a shovel and tow rope also as you never know. There are quite a few warning signs and the first one I saw advised snow chains to be put on at Springfield but as there was no sign of anyone enforcing it, I carried onto Porters Pass, where there was a check point and the advice was that snow chains would be needed by Castle Hill, but in the the end I was able to drive to Arthur's Pass township.
