Gig Review- The Have, Dukes and Mustard at Dux D Lux, Christchurch Sat 7th July
July 8th 2007 07:29
Hi everyone
Bit of a last minute decision to see the bands play as my mate Steveo who is more into his music than I am, said he was going and did I want something different to review?
'Hell why not' I thought, so here we are. Now before I start, I must admit that I'm really not upto speed on the kiwi music scene, so you will have to bear with me.
We arrived at about 9pm on a very cold Christcurch night and quickly made our way to the bar where the bands play.First on stage was Mustard, a local Christchurch band and although there weren't too many people in the bar at the start, once the band started to play, it quickly began to fill with a mixed audience.

I must admit I last night I did wonder about who influenced their music and The Doors, Supergrass and The Black Seeds did spring to mind. I really liked these guys, there was some very nice guitar ( a little Hendrix-ish), great beat and rhythm, also songs with a local theme are a nice touch.
Overall I though they were great and will be keeping an eye open in future for more of their gigs.

The next band to play was Dukes, another Christchurch band who until tonight I hadn't heard play before either.
The Dukes formed in 2003, and released their debut album, Lil’ Sunshine, in May 2005 on the small New Zealand independent record label, Elite Recordings. Three singles have been released from this album: Morning', Luv Came Thru, and Rather Be With You.
In the past they have toured the New Zealand University Orientation Circuit and have also opened for INXS. In 2007 the Dukes won the New Zealand leg of MTV Kickstart, a music competition for bands from New Zealand and Australia. The band came second, however, to Yves Klein Blue, one of the Australian bands in the competition.
The Dukes look set to release their second album, their first as a five piece, in 2007 and it will include the single Always Forever.
Music from Dukes recently featured on an American Drama series, Brothers and Sisters.
Jo Barus (Bass, Vocals) Matt Barus (Guitars, vocals) Brad Banks (Guitar) Fausia Fialele (Drums) Lauren Mitchell (Keys, vocals) (net sourced)
Lead vocals Matt Barus understands and knows how to work the crowd and even I found myself clapping my hands and tapping my foot to the beat. Their style of sound is hard to place as it has a catchy, melodious groove and again I must admit Iiked it, also I was impressed how they worked hard to get the crowd going, with Matt even walking off stage and around the people dancing. Cool. And there was a song which according to Matt quoting as sounding like 'If Johnny Cash had married Michael Jackson, so thats something you don't get to hear every day.
Once again I liked this band and can't see any reason as to why they can't go onto greater things, so will be keeping an eye out in future for them also.

The final band to play were The Have, again hadn't heard of them until now but judging from their website the most well known.
The Have formed in the early days of 2002, while still in the clutches of high school.
Their first notable shows including opening for Pacifier and Grinspoon in their hometown of Wanganui and playing at the World Series event in Auckland.
"The Have. It was the end of the night, I was drained. They just rocked. They really blew me away" Arnold Frolows, Ex Music Director, Triple J Network
They caught the eye of Converse and Red Bull who both now sponsor the band.
In 2003 the band have played at the Big Day Out, toured the North Island with Aussie rock ‘n’ roll hero Jimmy Barnes, supported Betchadupa, Blindspott, Evermore and PanAm. They were privileged to perform at a BFM Live To Air and the Juice TV Live At Galatos gig, enjoyed a slot on the main stage of the True Colours Festival at the St James Theatre in Auckland and recently performed at the V8 Supercars weekend and Paihia on New Years Eve.
"The Have plug into the raw sexuality of 70s rock and revel in the riff-o-mania" Pulp Magazine
Their first single 'Right On' was released in December 2002 and was in the BFM Top 10 for a month, supported by the B.Net and playlisted on Channel Z. It also appeared on the Red Surf Compilation and the V8 Supercars Compilation.
The video, directed by Greg Riwai (Fish n Clips), was a finalist in the 'Breakthrough Artist' award at the 2003 Juice TV Awards. 'Right On' was also used in a Canterbury Advertisement for the Rugby World Cup and in an X Box advertisement!
Their new single 'The Fuzz' was the first track on Indie Hit Disc 24 (ahead of The Datsuns and Scribe!) and was instantly added to BFM, appeared in the BFM Top 10. It also was added to Channel Z, Bayrock and The Generator. The video was also immediately added to Juice TV and C4.
Band Members:Brodie White (guitar, vocals),Peter Mangan (guitar),Blair Gibson (bass),Mike De Marie (drums) (net sourced).
As soon as these guys started to play, I knew we were in for something different, the crowd went wild and there was a latent energy building within the air, then Whamm, the band started to play. This was raw, exciting and loud, with a hint of blues somewhere in there? This was an assault on your senses although most of the time it felt like you were almost overwhelmed by a seething wall of noise. they did play one song, which I believe is going to be their next single released and this was sung at a lower tempo and I thought was awesome. At an open air venue or bigger stage I expect you really get the benefit of their rock but in somewhere as small as the Dux, their sound just overpowered the senses.

Overall an awesome night of sounds and great value for $10 too, so all these bands are worth checking out if playing live and their websites have plenty of info and youtube pages.
