An evening with Dave Gibson and Batman at Fat Eddies Bar, Chch
As previously promised a week earlier, here is a more in depth review of Fat Eddies Bar in Sol Square, Christchurch.
Take a walk along His Lordships Lane
As there is plenty to see and do
Sol Square 8.30pm
I arrived at about 8.30pm and as I walked in through the entrance, noticed that there were two acts playing tonight. One was a guy called Dave Gibson and the other was a group called Batman but more on them later.
The bar is divided into different areas, there is the main stage and some comfy couches that face a lovely warm fire place. Directly facing the stage is the main seating area which consists of small tables and chairs, which combined with the low key lighting give a relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy the music.
There are seating booths and tables and a great outside balcony for anyone who smokes.
The bar staff are very friendly with a real can do professional attitude and no drink is too strange or too much trouble for them to make for you. The impression you get when entering Fat Eddies is mixture of a bohemian jazz club and Moulin Rouge, but the design and concept is very well thought out with the end result being a very hip and happening place to be.
Fat Eddies opened in mid April of this year and over the coming year another 6 bars will be opening, ranging from a vodka bar to a bar called Yellow Cross, which will feature live bands, so Sol Square and the Lanes are going to be the place to watch and will so rock in the warm summer months.
I took the opportunity to chat with Dave Gibson before he began his act.
H Can you tell me how long you have been playing the piano for?
D I have been playing for about 20 years now
H What made you decide to play this kind of instrument?
D I was learning to play the sax at school, I thought it would be kind of cool and get the girls but then the guy who was teaching me played the piano, so thought I would give it that a go.
H Does playing the piano have the same effect as the saxophone with the ladies?
D It has its moments (laughs)
H Do you just play local or do you tour?
D I have toured all around NZ but at present play the club, hotel, bar scene and I’m booked to play here next Sat.
H Dave Gibson, thank you very much
Dave played a huge range of songs ranging from The Beatles, Elton John, Foo Fighters and Oasis. So if you are passing next week and want to relax to some great music then drop on in.

By about 10.30ish the place was really starting to fill up with a steady stream of people arriving to hear the second act play which was a band called Batman. I didn’t get to speak to them before hand but their style was more of a funk/soul band. Once again very good and had people up dancing to the beat.
Batman
At 12ish when I left the place was still crowded and rocking and one thing I noticed was the wide range in age groups there, so its great to enjoy a night out and not be surrounded by drunk eighteen year olds.
Fat Eddies also serve a great food menu and a wide range of drinks, both alcoholic and non- alcoholic at reasonable prices.
'Go the AB's'
Overall a very good night to chill with mates, catch up with a friend I hadn't seen for ages and some networking thrown in for good measure, plus a strong win for the AB's.
