Christchurch Convention Centre
Having grown up on sci-fi movies like Star Wars and comics such as 2000AD, I thought this expo, being the first in Christchurch would be interesting to have a look around. So I made my way to the entrance at 9.20 this morning and was surprised at just how many people where already there, with a wide representation of various age groups, ranging from families, teenage gamers and adults like myself.
First things to catch my eye was the two Daleks standing guard by the Tardis and I am pretty sure I have seen one of them pulling a security shift at Addington Books along Lincoln Road, so a nice welcome to the expo.
The main hall was already filled with eager shoppers and fans alike, all looking for that special collectable to finish off or start their collection. It was nice to see some well known retailers, such Borders, Whitcoulls and Toyworld coming on board to support the event with a wide range of dvds and toys/collectables availabe.
There were some awesome stand alone retailers such as The Medieval Shop,
www. themedievalshop.com . Now these guys were pure entertainment and for all you knights out there, they have everything a squire could need for his lord. For as I was wandering around, I could hear all this noise and children shouting like at a pantomime and it was these guys having fun with the crowd. Great to see and fun for the kids too!
Other stands that caught my eye were Reel Collectibles www.reelcollectibles.co.nz who had a great range limited edition and collectors items and also Weta Collectibles www.wetaNZ.com, who had some impressive pieces on offer at affordable prices for the beginner or avid collector and I was very impressed by Dr Grordbort’s Infallible Aether Oscillators (Rayguns), these were very cool! .
Another stand that had some great merchandise was Eaglemoss Publishing Group, they distribute all of the part works magazines in NZ and a couple they had on offer was the Marvel Figurine Collection and the Lord of the Rings chess set. These both feature stunning detailed figurines, which are hand painted and crafted in lead, also each figure comes with its own magazine. The quality of both these collections, are amazing for such a reasonable price and I might even be tempted to collect them, once they appear in the shops.
I will split this post into two as it will be rather longer otherwise, so be sure to check out part two for info and piccies regarding the 501st Legion (with piccies of Imperial Troops on route to Endor and Boba Fett stalking aound the Expo looking for Han Solo
