Armageddon Expo Part 2
April 14th 2007 06:55
Welcome back
I guess one of the highlights for me, would have to be the visit by the 501st Legion, which really added to the setting the scene for the convention and it was great to see the kids faces when they spotted an Imperial Trooper looking for outlaw droids or Boba Fett stalking through the crowd looking for his next bounty.
The Fighting 501st Legion is the premiere organised group for people who own and proudly wear the costumes of the stormtroopers (and other imperial characters) from the Star Wars movies. We participate in all sorts of activities, including but not limited to attending Charity and Fund Raising Events and 'trooping' at Conventions( sourced from www.outpost42.co.nz)

Now there seems to be this idea that people who dress up as characters from the movies are a bit geeky or something but I think people are missing a couple of important points here. Firstly the kids loved it, to see their favourite characters in the flesh and the guys or gals were really great at making it an memorable experience for the fans and secondly I expect its great fun too.
I had a quick look on their website and it's great to see just how much charity work they do, with 42 troopers and Rebels dropping in at the Starship hospital in March of this year, so well done and very nice to see.
On a personal front, I thought it was pretty cool too, mind you I'm bit of a big kid at heart, so who knows, I might have to see if there are any recruitment flights to Endor?
'Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?'
This colourful young lady caught my eye with a vest full of flashing badges, the stand behind sold a great range of various items that flashed, blinked or just lit up.
There was also a PS3 stand and I had a good chat with one of their staff, who was pretty switched on , explaining to me about the PS3, online gaming and also Blu Ray too. I am bit of a gamer from time to time but was totally impressed by the sharpness, detail and colours of the PS3.
Also available were autographs and photos from shows such as Stargate, Dr Who, Farscape and many others. I didn't wait for the signing or photo sessions, it would have been nice to maybe got an autograph but with a $30 signing fee, a little on the expensive side really. Although it was good to see the expo have such guests such as John Rhys Davies, Avery Brooks and Don S Davis as well as the creators of Bro Town and the many animation guests who were in attendance.
Overall, even though I have been bigger conventions in the UK, I thought this was pretty good for the $15 entry fee and there was something for small kids and big kids alike. So if you haven't been yet, its still on tomorrow 9am to 6pm, so forget about the gardening and rediscover your childhood for a couple of hours, it's fun.
Bring on the next expo!!
